Rehabilitation Goals

Short and long term goals are set for an athlete to acheive during the rehabilitation process.  Short-term goals provide immediate, achievable targets for the athlete that should be specified daily.  Long-term goals are met by successfully achieving each short-term goal, which will ultimately lead to the return of the athlete back into the game.

Short-Term Goals

Post-Surgical

  • Pain-free range of motion

  • Regain structural integrity within the first week

  • Full weight-bearing at two weeks  

  • Increase ankle plantarflexion to 60 degrees to allow normal gait 

  • Increase ankle dorsiflexion to 20 degrees to allow normal gait 

 

 

Long-Term Goals 

Post-Surgical:

  • Increase strength to at least 80% of pre-injury state 

  • Return to full contact play within ten weeks 

  • Have images taken six months post-surgical to ensure proper bone union
