Anatomy of the Foot

There are 26 bones in the foot that include 7 tarsal bones, 5 metatarsals, and 14 phalanges.

Tarsal bones: calcaneus, talus, navicular, cuboid, medial, middle, and lateral cuneiforms.

Metatarsals: labeled 1-5 from medial to lateral

Phalanges: 2 are located in the hallux (big toe) and 3 are found in the remaining toes

The calcaneus is the largest bone in the foot and connects to the tarsal bones.

There are three arches of the foot known as the medial arch, lateral arch, and longitudinal arch (9).
Anatomy of the Fifth Metatarsal
The fifth metatarsal consists of:

Styloid process - A bony prominence that protrudes laterally and inferiorly from the base of the fifth (13)

Epiphysis - the end of the long bone (3)

Metaphysis - the wider part of the long bone, in between the epiphysis and diaphysis (4)

Diaphysis - the shaft of the long bone (13)
